When you move the shift lever across the bottom of the "J", make sure you hit the left side hard and see if the consistency improves.Is the gauge is pegged over full, it's either a bad sender or open ground issue. If it's pegged empty the sender wire is grounded out. You should have 12v coming into gauge and 8.3v or so going out to sender. To test your sender, use ohm meter. Full tank is 90 ohms.
